Help 25 Flood-Affected Shopkeepers Rebuild Their Livelihoods in Nuristan
A $2,000 grant can help a small business owner start againOn July 20, 2026, a devastating flash flood swept through Parun, the capital of Afghanistan’s Nuristan Province.The flood struck the city’s commercial centre, damaging markets, shops, workshops, vehicles and business assets. Many small shopkeepers lost their merchandise, equipment, savings and only source of income within minutes.According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, the floods killed 23 people, left five people missing and injured 125 others. Five markets and approximately 70 shops were also affected.Rushd Charity Foundation has completed an initial field assessment in the affected area. Our team found that the most severe economic damage was concentrated in Parun’s markets and commercial centre. Residential damage in the areas visited by our team was comparatively limited, while many traders had lost all or most of the capital invested in their businesses.Campaign Goal: $50,000Rushd Charity Foundation aims to provide direct cash recovery grants to up to 25 verified small shopkeepers and business owners who lost all or most of their business capital in the flood.Each selected beneficiary may receive up to $2,000, depending on:the level of verified business loss;the amount raised through this campaign;the household’s financial vulnerability;whether the damaged business was the family’s main source of income; andwhether the family suffered a death, serious injury or another severe consequence of the disaster.Your donation can help a family earn again$50 contributes toward replacing essential tools or stock.$100 helps a shopkeeper begin purchasing basic merchandise again.$500 provides a substantial contribution toward restarting a small business.$2,000 may provide a full recovery grant to one selected shopkeeper.Donate Now and Help Rebuild a Livelihood[DONATE BY BANK TRANSFER] The Flood Destroyed More Than ShopsA small shop in Parun is often more than a commercial property. It may be the only source of income for an entire family.When a shopkeeper loses merchandise, tools and working capital, the consequences continue long after the floodwater disappears. The family may no longer be able to afford food, healthcare, education or other essential expenses.Restoring a small business helps more than one individual. It helps a family regain income, allows workers to return to their jobs and supports the recovery of the wider local market.This campaign is therefore focused on livelihood recovery, not simply replacing damaged property. What Our Field Team FoundFollowing the disaster, Rushd Charity Foundation sent a team to Parun to observe the damage, meet affected people and assess immediate needs.Based on our field observations:the most serious destruction was concentrated in the market and commercial centre;shops and commercial buildings were filled or buried by mud, rocks and debris;merchandise, tools and business equipment were destroyed or swept away;some shopkeepers lost their entire working capital;the livelihoods of shop owners, workers and their families were interrupted; andresidential destruction in the locations assessed by our team was considerably less extensive than the damage to commercial properties.The Foundation’s field report, photographs and available video documentation will be published alongside this campaign.[VIEW THE FIELD REPORT] How the $50,000 Will Be UsedThe campaign seeks to provide: Purpose Target Maximum number of selected businesses 25 Maximum grant per beneficiary $2,000 Total direct recovery-grant target $50,000 These grants are intended to help selected shopkeepers purchase basic merchandise, replace essential equipment or take the first practical steps toward reopening their businesses.The grants are not loans and will not need to be repaid.They should not be understood as full compensation for every loss. In many cases, actual losses may be significantly higher than $2,000. The purpose is to provide a realistic starting point from which an affected family can begin earning again. How Beneficiaries Will Be SelectedReceiving assistance will not be based on personal connections, influence or an unverified claim.Rushd Charity Foundation will assess and document each proposed beneficiary before approving a grant.Priority will be given to applicants who:lost all or most of their merchandise, equipment or working capital;operated a small business that was the main or only source of family income;can provide evidence of the business and the flood-related loss;do not have sufficient resources to restart independently;have not already received equivalent recovery assistance from another organisation; andbelong to a household affected by death, serious injury, disability or another severe vulnerability.Where two applicants have suffered similar business losses, priority will be given to the household facing the greater humanitarian hardship.Final selection will be made through a documented review process conducted by the Foundation’s responsible committee. What Happens if Less Than $50,000 Is Raised?We will not promise 25 grants unless sufficient funding is received.If the campaign raises less than its $50,000 target, the available funds will first be allocated to a smaller number of applicants with the most severe verified losses and the highest vulnerability.Our intention is to provide meaningful recovery assistance rather than divide the available money into amounts too small to help anyone restart.The final number of beneficiaries and the amount paid to each person will be published in the campaign report.What Happens if the Campaign Exceeds Its Goal?If donations exceed $50,000, Rushd Charity Foundation will publish an update before allocating the additional funds.Subject to verified need, additional donations may be used to support other eligible small shopkeepers and livelihood earners affected by the same flood.No excess funds will be transferred to an unrelated project without a public explanation and appropriate donor communication. Why Direct Cash Assistance?Affected shopkeepers do not all have the same needs.One person may need to replace carpentry tools. Another may need basic food stock, clothing, household goods or equipment to reopen a workshop.Direct cash assistance allows each selected beneficiary to purchase what is most necessary for restarting the specific business.Cash grants will only be distributed after:field verification;beneficiary identification;assessment of loss and vulnerability;committee approval;confirmation that equivalent assistance has not already been received; andcompletion of the required payment and receipt documentation.
